What's new in the City Gardens Autumn 2010 (282kb)

Our survey said...

With responsibility for over 150 widely differing parks, piazzas, churchyards and gardens scattered around the City of London, it is important for the City Gardens section to ensure that each of these best serves the City’s community, according to its individual situation and potential. At the end of 2008 a residents survey was carried out in the City - The Place Survey’s results highlighted that only 59% of residents were satisfied with Open Spaces.

To find out why, we conducted a face to face survey with 1, 000 people.  It found that 81% of you use the Open Spaces in the City and that, on the whole are happy with what we do. 99.5% of respondents said that the standard of maintenance was fair, good or very good.  Accessibility, cleanliness, attitude of our staff and availability of useful information also scored highly.

So how can we improve?

Opening hours - some gardens in the City were closed at weekends, which was something that residents weren’t happy about – we are happy to report that Finsbury Circus and Portsoken Street are now open at weekends.

New playgrounds for the City – thanks to funding from Play England’s play builder project new play facilities are currently being built at Portsoken Street Garden and Tower Hill Gardens. The new play areas will be open from early April 2010.

Thank you to all who took the time to answer our questions – we will be working with the City’s other departments to ensure that we meet your needs in the future. We have produced a summary report detailing the main results of the survey and what action we are taking which can be downloaded below.
