Environmental Health

The Environmental Health falls within the Port Health and Public Protection Service of the Department of Markets and Consumer Protection, and provides a comprehensive environmental health service to the City of London - “The Square Mile” – the world’s leading financial centre.

Through the City’s Sustainable Community Strategy, we seek to maintain our status as a “World Class City which...”

..supports our communities

with our regulatory services focussed on seeking to ensure that through both advice and enforcement, the City’s business community is legally compliant and that it continues:

  • to pose only minimal risks to the health and safety of all;
  • to produce food hygienically and which is safe to eat;
  • to offer for sale goods which are safe and services that are fair; and
  • to remain “smoke free” if so prescribed

We also seek to maintain the City of London as a “World Class City which...”

protects, promotes and enhances our environment

by continuing:

  • to work nationally and locally to respond to opportunities and risks associated with climate change and create an increasingly environmentally sustainable city;
  • to encourage greater levels of water and energy conservation, increased recycling and waste reduction;
  • to identify local air pollution hot spots and seek to reduce air pollution levels and mitigate its impact where possible; and
  • to continue to minimise noise from new developments, transport and entertainment premises in a way that is consistent with promoting the economic development of the City.

The wide range of activities undertaken by the Environmental Health Service falls into three broad categories:

Environmental Monitoring & Pollution Control;
Food Safety;
Health and Safety (including Pest Control);
Licensing; and
Trading Standards

and the Service also undertakes Meat Inspection and associated duties at London Central Markets (Smithfield) on behalf of the Food Standards Agency.

We are based at Walbrook Wharf, 78-83 Upper Thames Street, EC4R 3TD.

Service targets

Each year Environmental Health contributes towards a business plan which includes a variety of service targets.

These targets are in support of both the City of London’s Vision and its Sustainable Community Strategy 2008-2014, and national initiatives and campaigns by organisations such as the Food Standards Agency and the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

Enforcement Policy

The City of London committed to the principles of good enforcement, as set out in the Legislative and Regulatory Reform Act 2006, the Enforcement Concordat and the Regulators’ Compliance Code and all enforcement decisions are taken with reference to these and to our Policy Statement on Enforcement which covers all regulatory services carried out by the Port Health and Public Protection Service.

Enforcement powers

Our officers have a range of powers from various Acts of Parliament delegated to them by the City of London.

If you would like to know the extent of the enforcement powers that our officers have and what may happen when an officer visits your home or place of work or contacts your business, then we have set the details out in a simple Frequently Asked Questions leaflet.

We always appreciate feedback on the variety of information and guidance we provide and our “When An Environmental Health Officer Calls ... - Frequently Asked Questions” leaflet is no exception so after you’ve downloaded a copy below, please let us know your views on its content, user-friendliness and over all how it helped you.
