Building regulations

Building regulations control provision of services, fittings and equipment in or in connection with buildings as well as about the design and construction of buildings. The requirements are set out in Schedule 1 of the Building Regulations 2010. Guidance on how to meet these requirements can be found within the Approved Documents.

The purpose of the Approved Documents is to give guidance for a number of typical building situations. There is no obligation to adopt any particular solution contained in an Approved Document as there may well be alternative ways of achieving compliance which may be more preferable.

The Building Act 1984 gives the Approved Documents legal status.
