Employment of children and young people

Children and young people are allowed to work, but only to the extent that their health, development and education are not put at risk. The law places restrictions on the type and amount of work they can do.

There are two types of voluntary or paid child employment which require either a child work permit or child performance licence.

Child performance licence

Children or young people taking part in a performance such as TV, filming or theatre must obtain a performance licence and a licensed chaperone must accompany the child at all times. To find out more go to the following pages:

Child performance licences
Chaperone Services

Child Work Permits

Employers must obtain a Child Work Permit before employment can take place.

To find out more go to the Child Work Permit page.
