What do you do in your role?
I am a Ward Deputy for Lime Street Ward. In this capacity I
deputise for Alderman Sir John Stuttard. I also liaise with my two
colleagues, Dennis Cotgrove and Elizabeth Rogula. After discussions
with them I allocate them to Ward Committees.
I have been Chairman of the Planning &Transportation Committee
for the past three years and I am now Deputy Chairman. I am also
Chairman of the Streets Walkways Sub-Committee. I have been
Chairman of the Hampstead Heath Management Committee which
also looks after Queens Park, Highgate Woods and Keats House,
Epping Forest and Commons Committee, which also looks after Burnham
Beeches, Ashtead Common, and the Surrey Commons, and I have been
Chairman of the Open Spaces Committee. I continue to serve on these
Committees.
In addition I serve on the Policy and Resources Committee, the
Resource Allocation Sub-Committee, the City Lands and Bridge House
Estates Committee, the Committee of Managers of West Ham Park, the
Establishment Committee and the Barbican Centre Board.
When, why and how did you first become involved with the City
of London Corporation?
I became a Common Councilman in December 1986 and became
involved because my husband had been a Member before me. I was also
a Liveryman of the Gardeners’ Company and was therefore aware of
the City governing structure.
What do you think the key qualities/experience are that people
doing your role should have?
I am not sure what qualities are required except that
stamina and determination play a part, plus a sense of humour. As
to experience, I learnt on the job.
What’s the most interesting thing about the role?
The variety of the Committee work, the opportunity to meet
really interesting people and to play a part in shaping COL policy,
plus the ceremonial side of City life.
Why would you recommend it to others?
See above. It is a very good organisation to be a part of and,
if you commit the necessary time and effort, you can have real
influence. I would also mention the political independence which is
a real advantage.
