The Equality Act 2010 introduced the Single Equality Duty for
public bodies and incorporated previous statutory duties including
race, gender and disability which were introduced to improve
equality outcomes for these particular groups.
The Equality Duty requires the City of London Corporation to
show that in its decision-making processes and in service delivery,
it has had due regard to the need to
- eliminate unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation
and any other conduct prohibited by the Act;
- advance equality of opportunity between people who share a
protected characteristic and people who do not share it; and
- foster good relations between people who share a protected
characteristic and people who do not share it.
These are often referred to as the three aims
or arms of the general equality duty. Having due
regard for advancing equality involves:
- Removing or minimising disadvantages suffered by people due to
their protected characteristics.
- Taking steps to meet the needs of people from protected groups
where these are different from the needs of other people.
- Encouraging people from protected groups to participate in
public life or in other activities where their participation is
disproportionately low.
The City of London needs to demonstrate that it has considered
how the decisions that it makes, the services it delivers and its
employment practices affect people who share different protected
characteristics:
- age
- disability
- gender reassignment
- marriage and civil partnership (but only in respect of
eliminating unlawful discrimination)
- pregnancy and maternity
- race – this includes ethnic or national origins, colour or
nationality
- religion or belief – this includes lack of belief
- sex (gender)
- sexual orientation
The specific duties require public bodies to
publish a range of information that demonstrates their compliance
with the Equality Duty by 31 January 2012 and by 6 April 2012 to
publish equality objectives for next three to four years.
At the City of London there is a strong commitment to delivering
high quality services to all sections of the community,
irrespective of age, disability, gender, race, religion, belief or
sexual orientation. It recognises and celebrates diversity and
supports initiatives that improve outcomes for communities across
London.
The City of London serves a large and diverse community within
the Square Mile which includes a residential, business and City
Worker population. Our aim is to ensure that the services we
deliver are high quality, responsive and inclusive. Services should
meet the needs of the different sections of the community and are
appropriate for one of the most diverse cities in the world.
On this page City of London has published information that
demonstrates that it is meeting its obligations under the Equality
Duty. The information is divided into service delivery and
employment data. This information will be updated through the
regular reporting mechanisms to the Members and through external
publication of progress reports of the Single Equality Scheme.
Between now and the end of March 2012 the City of London will be
working with local communities, partners and other stakeholders to
finalise its equality objectives which will be published no later
than 6 April 2012.
