Electricity

Tunnel with cabling Electricity is the lifeblood of any City. UK Power Networks is responsible for providing the City of London’s 350,000 workers and 8,000 residents with enough power to support the ongoing needs of their buildings and homes.

Within London UK Power Networks manages over 30,900 km of underground network offering a supply reliability of 99.98%.

Demand for electricity in the City of London has increased dramatically in recent years, owing to the widespread use of power intensive IT systems, and associated cooling systems to support trading floors within City businesses. The City of London’s City Property Advisory and Highways Management Teams are working closely with UK Power Networks to ensure that the Square Mile's electricity supply network is provided with sufficient capacity and resilience for its current occupiers and for new buildings which will be coming online in the future.

33 KV Network

UK Power Networks has developed a new 33 KV network that will be used to supply all buildings requiring more than 5 Megawatts of electricity, and is being constructed in order to accommodate the growing need for more electricity to supply new development in the Square Mile.

The 33KV network will provide much needed increased network capacity and greater resilience to buildings, and will be delivered in three phases with phase one being completed in 2012, which can be seen in the Strategic Utilities Street Works Map (PDF, 1.7mb)

Gas

National Grid gas mains replacements

National Grid is undertaking a programme of works to replace the City’s oldest gas mains, many of which are over 100 years old, and which over time have eroded,  causing gas leaks.  National Grid will be replacing these mains on a gradual basis, as they reach the end of their life cycle, and therefore the works will only affect small areas of the City at a time.
