City Briefings

British diplomatic staff at posts overseas are an invaluable resource for the promotion of UK-based financial and business services, and for linking City expertise to other areas of trade and development. In partnership with UKTI, the joint agency between the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, the City of London co-ordinates a twice-yearly programme of five-day courses covering City issues in more depth are held for staff at a senior level, including some going to post as HM Ambassadors of Deputy Heads of Mission.

The courses are held in the City of London's City Marketing Suite at Guildhall, and are designed to generate a general awareness of the size, scope and international nature of the City in order to assist commercial staff in dealing with financial services and inward investment queries, and to introduce the participants to practitioners and trade associations in order to foster links which will be of value to both sides in the future.

Recent briefings

The latest briefing course was held in June 2009. 18 people from a wide range of countries attended the course, together with 4 colleagues from UKTI in the UK. They received talks from, or visited, a wide range of business City representatives. A welcome lunch and networking reception were also held for them.

City Contacts Programme

The Economic Development team aims to ensure that the City of London Corporation is fully aware of and responsive to the views of its business constituency, regardless of size, sector or national ownership. In this way it ensures that its promotional work, its local authority functions and its ability to focus influence in Westminster, Whitehall and increasingly Brussels is properly informed. A programme of contacts with City firms, markets and trade associations gathers intelligence and enhances joint working. The programme complements other areas of the City of London’s work, including high-level hospitality, contacts between Members and their electors, and the work of The City Together in developing the City’s Community Strategy.
