The Square Mile has over 350,000 workers, and has one of the
biggest concentrations of smartphones in the UK. Having the
best communications infrastructure in place to access vital
information on the move, is therefore of critical importance in
ensuring that the City of London remains ahead of the game, as the
world’s leading global financial and business centre.
The City of London and The Cloud have partnered to bring
comprehensive outdoor public WiFi coverage to the Square Mile,
giving users greater freedom to use WiFi to access internet
applications and business information, whilst on the move, using
smartphones, tablet PC’s and laptops. The Cloud launched the
City WIFI network in 2006, providing an outdoor coverage of 95%
across the City of London, installed on street furniture such as
street lighting poles and CCTV masts.
The network is currently accessed by over 50,000 users, which has
led to the need for greater bandwidth capacity to coper with
demand. The Cloud has therefore undertaken a full network
upgrade and major technology refresh, which has quadrupled the
network’s wireless capacity across 95% of the City, and created the
largest gigabit WIFI network in Europe.
The network can be accessed by all users for free for 15
minutes per day (with users being charged thereafter).
